Title: AN ERROR ANALYSIS OF STUDENTS' SPEAKING ABILITY ON DIALOGUE FOR THE TENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMA SWASTA IMELDA MEDAN

Abstract: Speaking is one of the most important aspects that must be learned and mastered. How to speak fluently is one of the potension of learning English as a foreign language. The aimed of this research was to know the types and the causes of errors which made by students in speaking ability by using dialogue. This research was the qualitative research design which used transcript instruments from the results of students’ speaking. The sample of this research is the tenth grade students of SMA Swasta Imelda Medan which consisted of 20 students. Then, the results of the transcript speaking which made the students while speaking activities, the researchers examined them to find out what types of errors often appeared in students while speaking by using dialogue. And for the causes, the researcher used the transcript result interview to find out what causes of errors which made by students while speaking on dialogue. The results of this research show the types of errors in students’ speaking ability that divided into; speech error, morphological error, and syntactical error. As the result was 16% with total 27 errors in speech error ; the researcher found six (6) of nine errors: silent pause was 8 error, filled pause was 1 error, repetition was 10 errors, slip of tongue was 2 errors, false start (unretraced) was 2 errors and (retraced) was 4 errors; in morphological was 67% with total 113 errors: error in pronunciation was 106 errors, error in vocabulary was 1 error, and error in word selection was 6 errors, and then the syntactical error was 17% with total 28 errors include: omission was 21 errors, addition was 3 errors, and misordering was 4 errors. This problem influenced by cognitive and psychological factors. In cognitive reason the students felt lack of pronunciation mastery, lack of vocabulary, and lack of grammar, in phsycological reason the students feeling nervous, anxious and lack of confidence.
